How to Care for Hair Extensions?

How to Care for Hair Extensions?

No matter what generation you speak of, hair extensions are always an ongoing trend. They not only make YOU look good, but also give your hair a beautiful volume that makes the onlookers go wow! But taking care of them is always a big reason for concern. What to do and what not to do, is what most women and men find themselves Googling about. After all, it is one of your prized possessions and you’d want to go to any lengths (pun intended of course) to keep them healthy, clean, and shiny for regular use. So, if you’ve been worrying about the same, then you’ve definitely come to the right place. Here’s our special BestHairBuy list of dos and don’ts to help you keep your tresses just the way you like them.

Clip Extensions

If you’ve got clip in extensions on you, then here’s what you need to do. Remember, they need equal amount of care as your own hair.

The clips in extensions are the most important parts because if the clip goes faulty, you really can’t put them on, now can you? so make sure that you protect the clips and keep them safe the most. The easiest way to do that is to not wear your extensions to bed as sleeping with them on leads to bending of the clips thereby damaging them.

Now taking care of the hair is rather easy. Just think of them as your own real hair. Wash them once a month at least (but not too regularly too as you don’t want them to lose their shine). While washing remember to be gentle while applying the shampoo and the conditioner as being vigorous might pull the strands out of the clip. It is best if you can go for an extension-care shampoo or a mild shampoo to wash the hair.

Once you’re done washing them, simply hang the extensions out to dry. Do not brush them immediately as the fiber is quite sensitive which will get damaged if brushed while wet. Once dry, the tip for brushing the extensions is to work your way up from the bottom as that untangles each hair in a gentle way unlike brushing directly from the top which entangles it even more.

More tips to follow

• Do not heat too much while styling them.

• Use the extensions as per the instructions given them.

• Keep them moisturized enough for regular usage.

• In case of frizzy extensions, you can use a fabric softener.

Sewn-in Extensions

Sewn-in extensions are even more sensitive and thus demand a higher degree of care than the clip extensions. Just because they are sewn-in does not mean that you can be rough with them. So, you must follow a few tips to take care of those lovely extensions to keep them secure and long lasting.

Never go to bed without brushing your virgin hair because while sleeping there is a friction created between your scalp and the pillow case which makes the hair frizzier. Use a looper brush which is especially made for the extensions. As advised with real hair, one must always start brushing from the tips and then make your way up.

Washing regularly is a must when you have extensions as the oil deposits on the scalp can cause damage to the extensions and also lead to infections. Therefore, you must try washing every second day using a gentle shampoo and a conditioner (remember not to touch the sewn part with either the shampoo or the conditioner). Since the extensions have been sewn-in, you don’t want to leave them wet for long, thus drying your hair till the roots is very important. However, you must be gentle and the extensions should not be dealt with vigorously.

More tips to follow

• Avoid using hair styling techniques that demand the usage of heat-based methods.

• Use a net or a shower cap when you go to bed.
